What to look for in a cold plunge chiller
Buying a water chiller is where a lot of cold plungers get burned.
The chiller looks fine, the price looks like a win, and it works!
But fairly soon, a chill goes down your spine when you realize it can’t hold the temperature you want, you’re changing the water way too often, and it keeps breaking down!
Unfortunately, it's a story that unfolds far too often. The bottom line is that bottom-of-the-line chillers don’t really work and end up costing more in the long run.
This guide covers what to look for in a cold plunge chiller before you buy, especially if you are shopping for a remote (external) chiller that sits outside the tub.

Cooling Power (and Heating Power)
When it comes to actually chilling water (or heating it in the case of a dual cool/heat chiller), you want to make sure your chiller has enough power to get the job done.
Especially if you will be using it in an environment with drastic ambient temperatures (extreme cold or heat).
As such, we recommend looking for a chiller with at least 2500 W of cooling power for single-occupant tubs.
For cooling and heating cold plunge chillers, we recommend at least 3500 W for the heating component.
This will ensure the chiller you buy can actually hit and maintain the temperature you want.
Sanitation and Filtration
Many discount chillers have no built-in ozone/UV sanitization system and/or weak filtration.
For you, that would mean faster algae and film buildup and a far more frequent need to change water and clean the tub.
If a cold plunge chiller doesn’t have both a strainer and a quality filter that is easily changable, it's either going to:
Require far more maintenance - filter cleaning/replacing
Clog (and stop working) quickly
Completely break
So make sure you choose a model with a quality filter and strainer to minimize chiller maintenance and avoid costly breakdowns.
Pump power
This one is less of an issue with discount chillers, as some of them still have decent pumps.
Just make sure the chiller you buy has enough power to pump the distance you need (distance from tub to chiller) and through the filter you use.
We recommend a 4/5 HP pump or higher for most single-occupant setups.
Electrical certification (North America)
In Canada and the US, specific electrical safety certifications are required to legally use a chiller.
You should confirm the chiller has one of these certifications from a nationally recognized testing laboratory (NRTL). In Canada and the US, some of the most popular NRTLs are CSA, UL, ETL, and TUV.
Specifically, you should be looking for these marks:
CSA
UL / cULus
cETLus
cTUVus
If a chiller doesn’t have one of these labels, you can’t use it because it may not be safe.
CE and SAA certifications are not accepted/recognized in North America for electrical safety, so don’t be fooled by those.
Also check what the mark applies to, based on your intended use:
Full product/system listing: the chiller is fully certified. This means it’s ready to use, as is, notwithstanding additional requirements if you’re adding components to the setup.
Recognized Component: The entire chiller assembly or its parts were evaluated and certified as compliant with safety regulations, but are intended to be installed as part of a larger system. In this case, the larger system that is built will most likely require field evaluation.
If a seller will not show you the certification mark (which is different than a testing report) or only points to “CE approved” for a Canada/US buyer, treat that as a red flag.
Why this matters: uncertified or non-compliant chillers are more likely to cause harm. They can also create legal and insurance problems if something goes wrong. The cheap unit that is not allowed to be used is not a bargain; it's a health and financial risk.
Cheap chillers often cost more
What we see most with cheap external chillers (like a lot of those on Amazon) is that they break down quickly.
Lower upfront cost often means replacements, difficult returns, or ending up buying a second, higher-quality unit when the first quickly breaks.
We recently heard a customer story where they bought two discount chillers before upgrading to a quality cold plunge chiller.
The first was a cheap model bought on Amazon (about $700), and it did not work upon arrival. It was accepted as a return, but the process was frustrating with this larger-than-usual item.
When the second ‘discount’ chiller arrived, it worked! But broke after about six weeks…
Unfortunately, it was not returnable, so the customer was left out a bunch of money, and nowhere closer to an ideal home cold plunge setup than they were 2 months and 2 chillers prior.
They finally invested in a higher-quality cold plunge chiller that was built to last, and the experience has been “night and day!”
Less frequent cleaning, no breakdown headaches, and 24/7 ideal temperature control!
They’re still out the money from the cheap chiller, but they seem pretty chill now.
